Geographic Areas Linked to PB Map Series Geographic Reference Reports Includes Sub-County Geography within County |
|
ReadMe Information These county-based reports are intended as dual purpose tools that can be useful for providing - a quick summary of the geography of a county, showing geographic codes and basic pop and housing unit counts. - links to the pb (Pl94 block level) based maps in pdf format created by the Census Bureau. We were able to make use of the "Corner Points" file produced by the Bureau in order to determine which map sheet each of the geographic areas appears on. We actually just use the "internal point" latitude longitude coordinates provided on the 2000 Summary File geographic headers record for each geographic area, and wrote a program that would find the map sheet that contained that lat-long point. If the point was within the "bounding box" of an inset map, then we linked it to the inset map (which may not always be correct, since inset maps are not usually rectangles.) These reports deal only with hierarchal, sub-county geographic levels. We do not have entries for census blocks -- not because we do not have them -- they are on the data sets we created using the corner points files -- but because they would just make the reports too long. If you are looking for population data down to the block level we do have other reports available that go that far. See, for example, the Tract - Block Group - Block hierarchy geographic comparison reports that can be accessed at http://mcdc2.missouri.edu/webrepts/dp1_2k/ (select a county, then select this report from the link at the bottom of each county menu page.) The geographic hierarchy used in these reports is one place on township - place - tract and block group. At the end of the report there are also entries for places within the county. The Map column in these reports is, of course, a hyperlink to the pdf file for that map. But these might also be useful for those using printed paper copies of the maps, to assist users in knowing which map to pull out to see a specific geographic area -- at least the map which contains the area's central internal point. The Cell entry is an attempt to more precisely locate the internal point on the map sheet. There are 9 cells on a map sheet in a 3 x 3 grid. The cell codes use standard geographic codes for the grids. The 3 leftmost (westernmost) grids are labeled SW, W and NW corresponding to the lower-left, middle-left and upper-left grids. The 3 cells in the horizontal center of the map are labeled (south to north) S, C and N (for South, Centrl and North); and the 3 rightmost (easternmost) cells are labeled SE, E and NE. There are 2 data items from the 2000 decennial census which complete the report. These are the population and housing unit counts based on the short form survey (i.e. the "100% count -- as reported on Summary File 1.) Users should note that when the sample data are published there will be alternate "sample estimate" values for these values. But these complete count numbers will, or course, be more accurate. |
