What's New at MCDC in 2002

January | February | March | April | May | June | August | September | December

December 2002 Information relating to the 2002 Economic Census is now available.

The State Demographer, Ryan Burson, worked with the MO Department of Health to create 2001 population estimates for MO counties with age, gender, and in some cases, race components. See http://mcdc2.missouri.edu/pub/data/popests/PopEstyr01race.xls. [Also see the Methodology]

Demographic Profile 3 Trend Reports Using Data From SF3, 1990 & 2000 are constructed using the data from the census long-form (sample data).
September 2002 MCDC has aggregated SF3 data and has produced Demographic Profile Reports that are now available for Missouri Elementary and Unified School Districts

Similar reports are also available for Missouri Legislative and Congressional Districts.

For a review of all geographies available, see MCDC Demographic Profiles.

MCDC has developed an sas/internet application that will display specified tables from Summary File 3 for a single geograhic area. Called Summary File 3 (2000 Census) Table Generator, the user can enter either the logrecno (logical record number on the sf3 dataset; to get this for any mo geography use uexplore to extract logrecno, geocode and areaname from the mogeos dataset in sf32000.) Custom aggregated datasets, like moschls (schools) and moslds(school districts), do not have logrecno values so user should enter a SumLev code and then either a geocode value or the areaname. A list of table numbers (i.e., P1 p7) can also be entered for display. This application is the one used under the table-links in the dp3_2k profile reports which displays all tables at one time. By clicking on those table numbers, it invokes the sf3tabgen application and passes it the necessary parms. Results of this application should return most requests in less than 2 seconds.
August 2002 http://mcdc2.missouri.edu/data/sf32000 -- Summary File 3 includes detailed population and housing information from the long-form census questionnaire and provides data down to the census tract level for some categories, and to the block group level for other categories. SF3 is often referred to as "sample data" because the information was compiled from sample households that received the long-form questionnaire. Overall, SF3 contains 813 detailed tables (484 population tables and 329 housing tables) showing social, economic, and housing characteristics. More than 50 tables are repeated for nine major race and Hispanic or Latino groups. Examples of categories in Summary File 3 School enrollment by level of school (preschool through college) and type of school (public or private), poverty status by age and household type, income data, language spoken at home, employment information, place of birth by citizenship, home heating fuel, housing values, and much more. SF3 information is available for many geographies, including counties, towns, minor civil divisions (townships), zip codes, census tracts, and census block groups. Summary File 3 for Missouri was released on August 27, 2002. Also see the U.S. Census Bureau's press release.

A copy of the 58-page profile generated through the SDC program is available for the State of Missouri. See Missouri SDC Profile: Census 2000 SF3

June 2002 Demographic Profiles Derived from SF3, 2000 Census. The Census Bureau released a series of demographic profile products in May/early June of 2002. These products were in the form of Adobe Acrobat format print reports and corresponding data files in comma delimited format. We have downloaded those comma delimited ("csv") files and read them in to create the SAS data files found in this directory. The data parallel the information in the four DP reports. Where the reports have a percentage value we have also calculated and stored those percentage values as separate variables (which were not included in the csv files as distributed.) What you can expect to find here are good general overviews of the geographic areas summarized.

Those areas are limited primarily to governmental units: states, counties, cities (places), MCDs, Congressional Districts and Metro Areas.

Tables are available for other U.S. states through the MCDC Menu at Census Bureau Demographic Profile DP1 thru DP4 (Census 2000).

MCDC has also created a directory of variables from the indicators included in the Demographic Profiles. See Variable Names and Labels Used on the SF3profs Datasets

U.S. State and County Ranks are available for all 400+ variables from the Demographic Profile Series (1-4) and are available for extraction from SAS datasets in the MCDC UExplore application. See Counties and States.

The Office of Social and Economic Data Analysis has developed a link which include tables of select indicators for Missouri Counties. Many tables include data from the 2000 Decennial Census. See the Library of OSEDA Data Tables.

May 2002 Rollout of Census 2000 long-form data for Missouri Summary File 3 data will be released for Missouri from Census Bureau on May 29, 2002 [see http://mcdc.missouri.edu/census2000/longform2k_datarelease.pdf

MABLE/Geocorr 2k (geographic correspondence engine) is a web-based application that permits users to access and manipulate a large database of geographic code. This database is known as MABLE, an acronym for Master Area Block Level Equivalency. Both the web application and the underlying database have been recently updated to provide enhanced access to updated data. The URL for the new version is mcdc2.missouri.edu/websas/geocorr2k.html. Additional information relating to this applications is at http://mcdc.missouri.edu/test/geocorr2k_blurb.html.

April 2002 New Estimates Reveal Population Shifts Since 2000 - Missouri Office of Administration News Release on 2001 Population Estimates. Also see: 1) Percent Population Change in Missouri Counties: 2000-2001 [Black and White Map – http://mcdc.missouri.edu/images/2002/moco_popests_2001.pdf] and 2) 2001 Missouri County Estimates Excel Spreadsheet [mo_popests_2001.xls]

Summary File 2, 2000 decennial census. Important for those who are interested in detailed complete count data for special race/hispanic/Indian tribe population groups. Less important than in previous censuses because so much of the data here was already released as part of SF1. The special subgroups ("characteristic iterations") are represented on separate observations, identified by the ID variable CharIter. See our SAS format code showing the values of these codes. See the Census Bureau's SF2 page for more information, including access to the data via American Fact Finder.
Data for the population subgroups is only present for a geographic area if it meets the threshold criteria of at least 100 people in that category.

Missouri Census Update (Fall 2001 Issue). This issue highlights Missouri's GIS expertise to New York City following the events of September 11, 2001. Also, updates on the Census Bureau's release of population correction for five Missouri cities along with 2000 Census Information for Missouri towns are included.

Census 2000 Maps and Data for Redrawn Missouri Legislative Districts is a collection of tables and maps aggregated to Missouri legislative districts for House and Senate representatives and the 108th Congressional District.
