What's New at MCDC in 2003

January | February | March | April | May | June | August | November | December

November 2003 Population Estimates for Missouri, July 1, 2000 and 2002 By Major Race (alone) Categories and Hispanic by Sex Summaries: State and County | State and CBSA .

Population Estimates for Missouri, July 1, 2000 and 2002 One Dimensional Demographic Summaries (Hispanic, Race, Age and Sex) State and County | Missouri Portion of CBSAs.

The above reports also available for Illinois and Kansas. Data can also be extracted using MCDC's Uexplore/Dexter application.

Updates to MCDC Applications:
1. Uexplore has been rewritten and currently uses a single data extraction module (Dexter) rather than three extract modules used in the previous version.

A new online tutorial describing the Dexter data extraction tool (within the context of using uexplore to access the MCDC data archive) is now available. This is a powerpoint file, with an HTML version also available for those who do not have the powerpoint software.

2. Mable/Geocorr2k has been updated to include the new core-based statistical areas (metropolitan and micropolitan) recently released.

August 2003 The 5% PUMS data for Missouri is now available. Custom tabulation of the data will be available from MCDC at a later date. For additional details on this file, see the Census Bureau's page on 5-Percent Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) Files

June 2003 Missouri Metropolitan and Micropolitan Areas (Core Based Statistical Areas) Showing County Components as Defined by OMB, June 2003. Also see the Excel spreadsheet or Adobe pdf with the revised metropolitan statistical areas in Missouri. Additional details and a complete report for all U.S. areas is avaialable at http://www.census.gov/population/www/estimates/metrodef.html.

The Census Bureau has alerted us that they have no plans to incorporate the new metropolitan and micropolitan areas on American FactFinder in the Census 2000 files. This is because the new metropolitan and micropolitan areas are considered post-2000 definitions. The first plans they have for the new areas to appear in American FactFinder will be as part of the new population estimates for metropolitan areas, scheduled for release at the end of the year. The 2002 Economic Census will also incorporate the new definitions of metro areas. Inquiries to the Census Bureau concerning the Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Area Standards and the statistical uses of their definitions should be directed to Suzann Evinger (202-395-3093).

April 2003 Summary File 4-- The Missouri data is now available and posted in the MCDC data archive. See the Readme file for overview, or use the uexplore utility to access sf4 datasets in the MCDC's sf42000 data directory. Or access the Technical Documentation.

Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS).

Circular Area Profiles - Dempgraphic profiles for n-mile radii of specified locations anywhere in the U.S. Data from Summary File 3, the standard MCDC extract, is used.

July, 2002 population estimates at the county level for the entire U.S. were released on April 17 and are available from the MCDC estimates page. The data can be accessed via the uexplore utility web application - choose "Other Population" / "popests/ Post-2000" to get to the directory. Then choose datasets mocom02.sas7bvew (Missouri only) or uscom02.sas7bdat (entire country).

March 2003 The Census Bureau has released county work flow data from Census 2000. This information shows how many residents in a given county work in other counties (which are listed by name) and is a tremendous resource for tracking commuting patterns, suburban change, and the radius area of a town's employment and service area. See the following pdf documents on Counts of Workers Commuting To and From Missouri Counties: By Residence Geography [PDF/Excel] and By Work Geography [PDF/Excel]. Also see MCDC 2000 County to County Work Flow Reports - All U.S. States

MCDC has created a new "filetype" in the data archive for storing HUD community development block grant data. This is a special "derivation tab" of sf3 data that was done by HUD, who then published the results as Excel files on their web site. Files converted to SAS sets include MO, IL and KS. See Datasets.html for additional information.

February 2003 Census Maps Using 1990 and 2000 Data is a complete list of maps created for the Missouri House, Senate and 108th Congressional District. Maps created using Summary File 1 (100-percent counts) are also found with additional tables and charts under Census 2000 Maps and Data for Redrawn Missouri Legislative Districts.

January 2003 The Missouri Census Data Center has created a family of related applications that provide access to distilled demographic summaries of a wide array of geographic areas based on the results of the 2000 and 1990 decennial censuses. Each application is comprised of a similar set of software components. For additional information, see Demographic Profile Products
