November 2004

The MCDC has created the Cure for the Common Codes web application. A collection of state-specific pages that display most of the commonly used geographic codes for each state. In addition to displaying the codes and the names, the CCC pages contain many links to related web sites. A special page that displays these codes for the entire country is under development. (11/04)
September 2004
New estimates are now available (9-30-04) for population by age, race, sex and Hispanic origin through 2003. The reference date for these estimates is July 1. See MCDC reports for Missouri state and counties and Metropolitan/Micropolitan Areas [formerly known as CBSAs]. 2002 reports were previously reported and are available at Population Estimates by Age, Race, Sex and Hispanic (through 2002) for Missouri, Kansas and Illinois.

August 2004

The MCDC announces the launch of the Missouri Census Data Center listserve. At our Annual Conference in July many attendees indicated interest in such a listserve for people interested in census data and the MCDC web site. They wanted a place where ideas and information could be readily and quickly exchanged. To subscribe to the listserve send an email to listserv@listserv.sos.mo.gov and in the body of the message type subscribe mcdc your_firstname your_lastname

Soon after sending this message you should receive a confirmation that you are subscribed to the MCDC listserve along with instructions on how to address your messages to it or change your subscriber status.

We hope this tool will be helpful to all our data users. The opportunity to gain insight from one another is there. Now it will be up to all of us to post messages when we have questions, or want to share information or answers to questions posed by others. Please note that while this tool is being created to some extent as a tool for sharing amongst the Missouri Census Data Center core group and affiliate network, we in no way want to limit its use to that group. We invite all interested users to subscribe. You don't even have to live in Missouri.

A new addition to the MCDC data archive is the latest REIS data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, time series data for the years 1969 to 2002. The data can be accessed via the uexplore/Dexter software in the new beareis data directory. This new directory replaces the old bea data directory and reflects a significant change in how we convert and structure the data, partly in response to the changes brought about by the BEA's changes to the industry categories used on the income and employment files. Extensive metadata for this national collection is available via the Datasets.html page in the beareis directory.

June 2004

New population estimates through July 1, 2003 for Incorporated places and MCDs are now available. See the Population Estimates for Missouri and the U.S for access to the Missouri data. See "Annual Estimates of the Population for Incorporated Places in Missouri, Listed Alphabetically: April 1, 2000 to July 1, 2003" Excel and PDF.

These estimates for Missouri and the entire US can also be accessed via http://mcdc2.missouri.edu/cgi-bin/uexplore?/pub/data/popests and use the Datasets.html to navigate.

Ryan Burson (Office of Admininstration) has created a Map showing the change in population by incorporated places over the 3-year period.

May 2004

Detailed Demographic Profiles for U.S. Geographic Areas. A new national collection of very detailed demographic profiles based on the 2000 Census Summary File 3, generated using code developed by a national State Data Center consortium, are now available on the MCDC site. The new reports complement reports previously generated for counties and places in Missouri and other selected states. The new reports are for larger geographic entities for the entire United States. The home page for the new series contains links to the main menu pages for each of the 4 geographic groups. Those are states, places of 50,000+, metro areas (complete and within-state) and a combined grouping of US Totals, Regions and Divisions. An index page (pdf format) has been created that can serve as a reference for those trying to figure out which profiles contain data on what subjects and based on which SF3 tables.

April 2004
A new version of the MCDC's Circular Area Profiling System web application is now available at http://mcdc2.missouri.edu/websas/caps.html). The new version now allows doing block-group based aggregations (useful for doing smaller radii) for anywhere in the U.S. Another new feature lets you enter a 5-digit ZIP code instead of lat/long coordinates (and CAPS will look up the coordinates for the ZIP). There is also a new auxiliary report that shows what counties contributed data to the aggregation. The usage notes page has also been substantially modified to reflect the new features and to provide more in depth documentation.

The MCDC has received and processed the first set of ascii files representing the Census of Transportation Planning Package ("CTPP") special tabulations from the 2000 Census. Designed by the US Dept of Transportation for use primarily by transportation planners, the tables on these files provide detail regarding such items as time leaving for work and mode of transportation to work crossed with standard demographics such as age, race, disability status, etc. The data can be accessed using the uexplore software at http://mcdc2.missouri.edu/cgi-bin/uexplore?/pub/data/ctpp2000 (use the Datasets.html page to access the good metadata.) Currently, we have processed only the first set of Missouri files.

MO Office of Administration Press Release: 2003 Missouri County Population estimates. You can also access just the data (without the commentary or map) in xls, pdf or sas dataset format at http://mcdc2.missouri.edu/cgi-bin/uexplore?/pub/data/popests. The relevant files are the 2 mo_popests_2003 files (pdf/xls) and the complete data in SAS format in the mocom03.sas7bvew file (the dataset has the numbers for every year in the interval and the annual change components).

January 2004
Equal Employment Opportunity data from the 2000 census. Detailed occupation data by various demographic dimensions (age, race, sex) and geographic levels. See the sas_doc directory for the details. This is a very complicated filetype.

MCDC has converted the census files into SAS datasets which can be accessed via the Uexplore/Dexter application. Refer to Summary of Data Tables in /pub/data/eeo2000 With Links to Details for additional details.

Missouri Bank Deposits and Branches 2003 data is now available for Missouri counties. In addition, data pertaining to all U.S. institutions is available.

Files are available at Uexplore/Dexter. For additional details, refer to Summary of Data Tables in /pub/data/bankdeps With Links to Details.
